This child-size, Batman-theme quilt was a project created and donated to Ozark Piecemakers Quilt Guild’s Operation Squad Car program. Quilting cotton in orange, yellow, blue, black and Batman print was cut into hexagon shapes and assembled. The quilt is bordered by a different Batman print in cotton flannel. The back is solid orange.
The Operation Squad Car quilt program provides child-sized quilts to local law enforcement agencies. Donated quilts are stored in over 60 area squad cars and when children are taken into protective custody they receive a quilt to keep. All too often children are not able to keep many if any, of their own belongings and this program continues to provide comfort to children in stressful situations.
A good friend donated lots of her fabric stash for my charity quilt projects. Kelly donated the orange fabric used for the front hexagons and backing. The quilting was done on my home machine and followed the geometric lines of the hexagons.
I love finding ways to create quilts and other items from fabric leftover from other projects. Both of the Batman fabrics were leftover from custom pillowcases created for my grandson, Brady; the yellow and black were scarps from a Mickey Mouse quilt made for my great-great-nephew, Aidan; and the royal blue fabric scraps were from a baby quilt made for my friend Jane’s new grandson, Charles. The large image shows the final, laundered quilt and the smaller pics are prior to quilting.
